H-File M-Access (Dentsply Sirona) - Manual Hedstroem File
The H-File (Hedstroem file) M-Access from Dentsply Sirona is a highly aggressive manual endodontic instrument used for the active enlargement and smoothing of the root canal walls. It is a critical component in the shaping and cleaning process of the root canal system.
Technology and Design
-
Material: The files are made of stainless steel, providing the necessary strength and cutting ability.
-
Length (25 mm): The standard length for treating most root canals of permanent teeth.
-
Cross-Section (Teardrop/Conical): H-files feature a unique cross-section resembling a teardrop or a cone, with very sharp, helically arranged cutting edges, similar to a Christmas tree.
-
Manufacturing Method: Unlike K-files, H-files are manufactured by milling a tapered blank, not twisting. This gives them sharper and more aggressive cutting edges.
-
ISO Color Coding: The handles have standard ISO color coding (e.g., #20 – yellow), which corresponds to their tip diameter. [Image showing the teardrop/conical cross-section of an H-file]
Purpose and Advantages
-
Active Dentin Removal: H-files have a high cutting efficiency. They are ideal for rapidly removing large volumes of dentin and smoothing the canal walls.
-
Working Technique (Pulling Strokes): These instruments are designed to be used exclusively with pulling ("filing") motions, i.e., moving the instrument out of the canal (against the canal walls). They must not be used with rotational movements, as their aggressive design makes them highly prone to binding and fracture upon rotation.
-
Effective Cleaning: The pulling motion efficiently removes infected dentin and residual organic tissue adhering to the walls.
-
Obstacle Removal: They are used for removing gutta-percha (old filling material) or for dealing with small intracanal formations.
Important Precaution
Due to their aggressive design and potential for binding, H-files require great caution during use. They should always be used with only the pulling stroke after the canal has been pre-flared and enlarged with less aggressive K-files.
The H-File M-Access is an indispensable tool for the rapid and effective enlargement and cleaning of root canals.
